The Wonder of New Books and New Playground Equipment

Grant Report Update: St. Julie Model Primary Boarding School
The original purpose of this project was to enhance the educational experience of children at St. Julie Model Primary School by providing essential outdoor play materials and educational textbooks. The initiative aimed to foster a holistic development approach, combining physical activity through play with academic learning. By equipping the school with these resources, the project intended to create a more engaging, enjoyable, and effective learning environment for children aged 6 to 14. Many of the textbooks were outdated and worn. They need to be replaced to meet the current academic standards in Uganda in order to adequately prepare students for the primary leaving exam taken at the end of 7th grade. In order to maintain its status as one of the top primary schools in the region, St. Julie Primary School must maintain current textbooks and materials.

Through a generous grant from the Hilton Fund for Sisters, St. Julie Model Primary Boarding School purchased outdoor play materials and textbooks for children. Located in a rural area, St. Julie Primary School must provide all of the educational and play materials needed for the children. The school celebrated its 25th year in 2023. It has grown from one initial class of 36 third graders to seven
grades and 360 students. The original playground equipment, more than 20 years old, only accommodated 20 children per recreation time. There are no neighborhood parks. In order to encourage teamwork, physical fitness and imaginative play, St. Julie Primary School needs to provide adequate outdoor play equipment for the children aged 6-14 (first through seventh grade). We also updated the textbooks for math, literature, English grammar, science, and geography: 1,640 books in 29 subject areas.

At this time, this project is crucial to the congregation’s mission as it aligns with the values of community service and support for education. By investing in children’s education and development, the congregation is actively working to empower the next generation, reflecting its commitment to uplifting the local community. Additionally, fostering well-rounded development supports the spiritual and moral growth that the congregation advocates, ensuring that children not only excel academically but also grow as responsible, compassionate individuals.
