Catholic Sisters Week is nationally recognized annually, March 8-14th. To celebrate, the Sisters of Notre Dame are hosting their third annual “Stuff the Truck” food drive to support the Toledo SeaGate Food Bank on Friday, March 10, from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Walt Churchill’s Market, 3320 Briarfield Blvd., Maumee, Ohio 43537.
Event organizer, Sr. Sally Marie Bohnett, said, “We feel that serving persons in need is the best way we sisters can celebrate Catholic Sisters Week. It also brings awareness to the current increase in food security and its underlying causes such as poverty, unemployment/under-employment, and inconsistent access to healthy food.”
The Sisters of Notre Dame will be joined in prayer and with volunteers from the Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Sylvania Franciscan Sisters, Tiffin Franciscan Sisters, Ursuline Sisters, and the Sisters of the Visitation.
Non-perishable items or monetary donations may be dropped off from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. For convenience, Walt Churchill’s Market prepared donation bags of needed items for purchase too.
“We are enshrined in gratitude for all the hard work and dedication that the sisters put forth into hosting a food drive for all of those in need,” said Cheri’ Dennis, the community engagement director at SeaGate Food Bank, “With Food Stamp allotments decreasing; Seagate Food Bank braces for an influx in need, the support of the community becomes very critical in our day-to-day operations. Currently, our food sources are one million pounds short of where we need to be in order to continue to service the community in the capacity in which we currently serve. Every can contributed to our collection efforts bring us a can closer to closing that deficit so again we are excited as we move closer to Catholic Sisters Week, and all the blessings that come forth from the dedicated week.”
Suggested items include canned fruit and vegetables, canned tuna, canned meat, peanut butter, jelly, rice, beans, and seasonings.
