“Go to the Cross”

“When I was a novice, one of my tasks was to help feed sisters in the healthcare center. It took patience to gently and slowly administer just enough Ensure from the syringe that the sister could swallow. Not a caregiver by training and desire, this work invited me to really take in the frail humanity of the sisters. And of myself.
A novice’s work is to fall in love with Christ wholeheartedly, which takes a lot of conversations in prayer. One evening after this ministry, I came back to my room and looked at the crucifix on my wall. I understood in a moment, that there is nothing, no matter how tragic or messy, limited or broken, that is not held by that image, the reality of the crucifixion.
The words came to me, “There is no such thing as failure.” All is redeemed, taken back up into the heart of God, transformed but this unconditional Love.
Since then, the Exaltation of the Cross has been one of my favorite feasts. When I have a hard time finding God, I hear, “Go to the cross and there you will find me.” It never fails.”
