Sister Jean Marie Hoffman dedicated 40 years of her life to transforming the Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home (DCCH) into a place of healing for abused and neglected children. As a young sister in formation, she cared for eight boys despite having little training. “They knew I loved them, even though I was firm and disciplined,” she said. Over the years, her role evolved from childcare worker to therapist and eventually director of DCCH. “Children came in angry, withdrawn and hurting, but once they felt safe, they were able to heal and become new people,” she said.
Sister Jean’s unwavering commitment led to her recently being awarded the 2024 Kenton County, Kentucky Pioneer Champion Award. “Just to make a difference in the lives of the children with whom I worked was a wonderful blessing. I witnessed miracles occurring every day on that campus,” Sister Jean said.
Her lifelong loyalty reflects the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame, born from the compassion of our foundress, Sister Maria Aloysia Wolbring. Herself, orphaned at age seven, Sister Maria Aloysia felt a deep calling to care for neglected children. As a teacher, she took in a young student whose father could no longer care for her. Sister Aloysia decided to provide a home for this little girl and for other children who were experiencing neglect.
Sister Jean Marie’s devotion demonstrates the values held by SND USA, reminding us of the impact that one individual’s service can have on countless lives. Both Sister Jean Marie and Sister Maria Aloysia sacrificed their lives to ensure children could find safety, love and the opportunity to rebuild their futures. Their examples continue to guide the Sisters of Notre Dame, as we honor our charism, promote Catholic education and foster fullness of life for those who are most in need.
Just as they made a difference, so can you. We invite everyone to explore opportunities to support foster care within their local communities. Every effort helps make a difference in the lives of children in need.
