Celebrating 175 Years of Mission: Visits to Delphos & Norwalk to Mark The Milestone

As we continue our yearlong celebration of the 175th anniversary of the Sisters of Notre Dame, our hearts are full from two recent receptions held in communities that have shaped our story in profound ways: St. John the Evangelist in Delphos, OH and St. Paul Parish in Norwalk, OH. These gatherings were a special way for us to say thank you to the parish and to the wonderful parishioners who continue to support and welcome us so generously.

Our beginnings stretch back to Coesfeld, Germany in 1850, when a small group of women answered God’s call to serve. By September 1876, German sisters had arrived in Delphos. This is one of the first places in America where we began our ministry.

Many sisters who have ministered at St. John’s in the past and sisters who were Delphos natives, joined the sisters who are currently serving there for a chance to reconnect with former students, visit with parishioners and meet new friends who carry God’s love. Sisters and guests enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on our early foundation and to appreciate the love and support that have remained for generations.

Our time in Norwalk was equally meaningful. The Sisters of Notre Dame have a cherished history in that community and our ministry there continues to be a vibrant part of who we are today. The warmth of the parish community, their generosity and deep faith in Christ remains a source of strength for our mission. We greatly appreciated the welcome we received and the many stories shared of how SNDs have touched lives over the years.

We are especially grateful to Fr. Eric Schild, son of St. Paul, Norwalk, for joining us to celebrate Mass prior to the reception. His presence was a joyful reminder of the lasting impact these communities have had on vocations and on the life of the Church.

As we look ahead to the next chapter of our mission, we do so with great gratitude for communities like Delphos and Norwalk. These are the places where our history lives on, our ministry continues and God’s goodness is made visible every day.
