Sister Mary Paulynne Tubick, SND

(Janice Teresa Tubick)

December 1, 1946- January 25, 2025
Professed: August 16, 1969

Sr. Mary Paulynne, the daughter of Helen and Herman Tubick, was born on December 1, 1946. As a student at St. Rose of Lima Elementary School (Maywood) and St. Matthias High School (Huntington Park), she came to know the Sisters of Notre Dame and felt called to religious life. She was a member of the pioneer class at St. Matthias High. Her only sibling, Sister Mary Gabriella, also joined religious life as a Daughter of St. Paul.

Over the years, Sr. Paulynne served in various ministries, primarily in education. It was a joy for her to serve as the Principal of St. Rose of Lima and Vice-Principal and Dean of Students of St. Matthias High. Her commitment to the under-served was fulfilled during 18 years of ministry in the inner city, at St. Lawrence of Brindisi School in Watts, which “gave me the love for the missions.” Eventually, she was a missionary to Uganda, serving at St. Julie Model Primary Boarding School in Buseesa, for over seven years. After returning home from Uganda, Sr. Paulynne enthusiastically volunteered to give mission appeals each year. As recently as August of 2024, she traveled to New York to give several Mission Appeals. Her most recent ministry was to provide pastoral care for the incarcerated youth at Camp Dorothy Kirby in East Los Angeles.

For four months, Sr. Paulynne courageously faced pancreatic cancer, entering hospice just two days before her death. As she prepared for her death, she shared these word:

“Our God is good all the time.” These words I have pondered and reflected upon, especially after my recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. I am very grateful for the life God has given me as I prepare for the eternal kingdom of heaven. I have been blessed with many opportunities to touch the lives of others through various ministries and I in turn have been blessed by the goodness, kindness and life lessons that others have showered upon me. I am reminded of the wise saying of Maya Angelou in which we all should structure our lives. “People will not remember you for what you said nor will people remember you for what you did, but they will remember you for how you made them feel.” Please pray for me as I do each day for you…

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Notre Dame Center in Thousand Oaks, with a reception to follow. That Mass will be live-streamed and archived at this link. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 3 at Assumption Cemetery in Simi Valley.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame at 1776 Hendrix Ave, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 or online.
