Born Marcia Deye on February 24, 1942, Sister Mary Tereze was raised in Fort Wright, KY, where she attended St. Agnes Parish and was educated by the Sisters of Notre Dame at Notre Dame Academy. Drawn to the community that had shaped her faith, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1960 and professed her vows in 1963.
After earning degrees in secondary education and religious studies, alongside her certification in school counseling, Sister Mary Tereze dedicated her life’s ministry to Catholic education. She taught junior high students at Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s, St. Augustine and St. John’s. She later served at Notre Dame Academy and in the Sisters’ mission in Harlan, KY.
In 1977, Sister Tereze began a ministry that would span more than four decades at Bishop Brossart High School in Alexandria, KY. Serving as both a teacher and guidance counselor, she served as a trusted mentor, offering wisdom and compassionate support to generations of students as they navigated their academic and personal challenges.
Following her retirement, Sister Tereze continued her ministry of presence and service at St. Charles Community in Covington, KY. She faithfully provided Holy Communion to residents, delivered meals and continued to cherish the many friendships fostered throughout her years of ministry.
Whether in the classroom, the counseling office or among the residents she served, Sister Mary Tereze touched countless lives through her steadfast faith and unwavering dedication to both education and compassionate care.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Tereze will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Alexandria, KY. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until Mass begins.
