We are grateful to Conrad Hilton for Sisters for the Water Purification and Reticulation grant received by Notre Dame Secondary School, Syokimau, Kenya. The school survives on a borehole that supplies water for cooking and drinking for the learners and staff. The borehole water does not have the purity levels required to consistently protect the residents. The water is salty and has high levels of chlorine. The water purification plant has come as a very big blessing to the institution. Now the school has pure and safe water for drinking and cooking.
The project has addressed the following:
- Availability of safe and clean water for drinking and cooking. Now the students and staff can access free lowing safe and clean water for drinking at 7 water drinking water points in the compound. The school meals are also cooked in purified water.
- Learners do not carry drinking water from home. This has lessened the baggage the students carry daily from home. There are also fewer cases of students accidentally wetting their books because they no longer carry water to school.
- The school has a low maintenance cost because the new water purification machine is in perfect order. We do not spend money as before in regular replacement of membranes.
- There are very minimal typhoid and other stomach related infections among students and teachers as compared to last year.
- We trust that students will no longer develop brown teeth because the minerals in the water have been regulated to very manageable levels.
As Sisters of Notre Dame, our mission is to incarnate the love of our good and provident God. In fidelity to our charism we participate in the mission of Jesus Christ, witnessing God’s goodness and provident care to others. God has sent us to assist our sisters and brothers to direct their lives to God in faith so that all may experience God’s goodness. As we devote ourselves daily to the needs of the students in our school, we respond to the needs of the times. The dire need of our time was availability of safe and clean water for drinking and cooking. This need of the people we serve compelled us to seek for ways of reaching out to God’s people in loving service. This dream became a reality through the assistance of Hilton fund for Sisters when we received the fund to purchase a water purification plant.
